The Harmony of Our History: Zumbro Valley Chorus
The Zumbro Valley Chorus is a vibrant community of singers dedicated to the art of barbershop harmony. Founded on a shared passion for music, our journey began six decades ago and continues to resonate through the Rochester area today.
Our Founding Vision
In 1965, a group of visionary women gathered to share their dream of creating a dedicated vocal ensemble. Their enthusiasm for the unique ring of barbershop harmony led them to Sweet Adelines International. On May 31, 1966, their vision became a reality when they received their official charter as the Zumbro Valley Chapter.
Legacy of Leadership
Starting with 22 members under the direction of Richard (Dick) Hedglin, the chorus has maintained a steady tradition of excellence. In our 60-year history, we have been guided by only 14 directors, showcasing a remarkable level of stability and commitment to our craft. We recently welcomed Debbie Mason as our newest director to lead us into our next chapter.
Community & Performance
From our earliest days, the chorus has been an active part of the local community. Our history is filled with:
-
Charity & Service: Performing for the TV Cancer Telethon and visiting local nursing homes.
-
Events: Entertaining at banquets and hosting full-scale musical shows.
-
Grassroots Support: Raising funds for costumes and music through community bake sales, car washes, and garage sales.
